Cookie Policy

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files sent to the user by the website they visit. They are stored on the computer’s hard drive, allowing the website to recognize users and store certain information about them in order to provide or improve the service offered. Most cookies contain a unique identifier called a cookie ID: a string of characters that websites and servers associate with the browser in which the cookie is stored. This allows websites and servers to distinguish the browser from other browsers that store different cookies and to recognize each browser based on its unique cookie ID. Cookies are widely used by websites and servers to provide many of the basic services available online. If you make a purchase on a website, a cookie allows the site to remember the items you have added to your virtual shopping cart. If you set preferences on a website, a cookie allows the site to store your preferences for your next visit. If you register on a website, it may use a cookie to recognize your browser later, so that you do not have to enter your login credentials again. In addition, cookies allow websites to collect data on user activity, such as the number of unique visitors to a page each month. All these uses depend on the information stored in cookies.

Types of cookies: technical, profiling, and third-party cookies
Definition of technical cookies according to the Italian Data Protection Authority

Technical cookies are those used for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the user to provide that service.
Example of a technical cookie: the session cookie installed to maintain the user’s login.

Definition of profiling cookies according to the Italian Data Protection Authority

Profiling cookies are intended to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing the web.
Example of a profiling cookie: suppose that while browsing a website you search for sneakers and a cookie containing that query is installed on your browser. If, following that search, software or a plugin on the site uses that information to show you relevant advertising—such as ads for sports equipment or shoes in general—then the installed cookie is a profiling cookie.

Definition of third-party cookies according to the Italian Data Protection Authority

Another element to consider, for the correct definition of the subject matter, is the subjective aspect. It is necessary to take into account the different entity that installs the cookies on the user’s device. Depending on whether it is the same operator of the site the user is visiting—briefly referred to as the publisher—or a different site that installs cookies through the first one, i.e., a so-called third party.
Example of third-party cookies: cookies installed by social buttons such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc., cookies from Google Analytics, cookies installed through the embedding of YouTube video iframes, and so on; all of these are third-party cookies.
